The SASEC/TSEP project expanded renewable energy access in Karnali Province through mini-hydro and solar mini-grid systems, improving electricity availability and community resilience.

Project Overview

The SASEC/TSEP South Asia Sub-Regional Economic Cooperation Power System Expansion Project aimed to significantly expand electricity access in Nepal by developing and leveraging the alternative energy sector. Implemented across the remote and challenging terrain of Karnali Province, the project focused on establishing decentralized renewable energy systems to bring reliable power to communities, thereby fostering economic and social development.

Major Achievements

The project successfully delivered tangible infrastructure and community-level outcomes, including:

  • Comprehensive Baseline Survey conducted to assess needs and plan interventions.

  • Construction of Mini Hydro Power Plants:

    • Khatyad Khola Mini Hydro Power Plant in Mugu.

    • Giri Khola Mini Hydro Power Plant in Jumla.

  • Development of Solar Mini-Grids:

    • Solar Mini Grid installed in Gutu, Surkhet.

    • Demand collection and groundwork completed for a Solar Mini Grid in Kalikot.

  • Community Empowerment & Institutional Development:

    • Formation of 30 Saving and Credit Groups linked to the Giri Khola Mini Hydro Project in Jumla, promoting financial inclusion and local ownership.

    • Provision of technical support and facilitation for the transmission and distribution networks of the mini hydro and solar projects.

    • Successful collection of user cash payments by the community for the operation and maintenance of the Giri Khola Mini Hydro Power Project in Jumla, ensuring sustainability.

Project Location

The project was implemented in 10 districts of Karnali Province.
